If disaster strikes and you accidentally spill a drink on your laptop, don’t panic. Prompt action may prevent serious damage and the keyboard doesn’t necessarily have to be replaced.

The first thing you should do in the event of liquid spillage is turn the laptop off immediately. You must then get a clean cloth or paper towel and wipe off as much of the liquid as you can.  It is important that you take your laptop to a specialist laptop repair service like Creative IT and have it professionally cleaned as soon as possible.

You should ideally do this immediately and in any case the same day as liquids trapped under the keyboard will damage the keyboard membrane which means the keyboard will have to be replaced. Worse still, any liquid that gets inside the laptop case could cause severe damage to the motherboard circuits resulting in serious problems with corrosion and eventual failure of the motherboard.

Allowing your liquid damaged laptop to dry naturally and keeping your fingers crossed just won’t do. Wet keyboards need professional attention by a keyboard repair technician.  Liquid on the motherboard can also create short circuits, resulting in serious damage so you should never turn your laptop on until a qualified laptop keyboard repair technician has inspected the laptop and tells you it is safe to do so.
